Soup history
It has been said that history is only written and interpreted by those in power, political power that is.
Does that mean that people who cook
do not have much power?
Food origin is notoriously hard to trace. This is because historical records of culinary events are not systematically collected.
However there are still some historical records. Here are some. I hope to find more and update this page with interesting soup history, especially about chinese soups.
The earliest nation
to drink soup is Ancient Greece.
It has been said that during the
Olympics, every athlete brings
a goat or calf to the temple of Zeus to
participate in the rituals.
During the rituals, these animals were
killed and cooked in a huge pot.
The meat were distributed to the non-athletes
present while the soup are given to the athletes
to drink to increase their strength.

Archaelogists discovered
crude pots in the Near East.
They believed that these pots were used
to boil grains into soup.
|
The earliest
recorded soup recipe
was found in an ancient cookbook from China.
Created before 2700 BC, there were a total of
10 soups recipes. Apparently one of the soup
recipes is still being used today.
|
In Europe, the earliest known soup is probably
the Marseilles fish soup from France.
This fish soup recipe is about
2500 years old.
It was most probably brought into France
by the Greeks although many French
are convinced that Marseillians would have
invented the soup sooner or later.
